Hey there Summer mamas, let’s be real, when we’re on the move, our bags are like Mary Poppins’ carpet bag – they’ve got to hold an arsenal of just-in-case goodies because, as every mum knows, a peaceful outing is all in the prep work.

To help you out, we’ve come up with the ultimate Summer survival kit, so you’ll be all set for whatever the sunny days throw at you (except for the tantrums … godspeed).

“SLATHER ON THAT SUN CREAM, GRAB YOUR SHADES, AND LET’S MAKE SOME SUN-SOAKED MEMORIES.”

What to pack in your Summer bag

1. Water

It’s a scorcher out there, and keeping the whole fam hydrated is key. A sippy cup or water bottle full of the cool stuff should be within arm’s reach at all times.

2. Snacks, snacks and more snacks

Snack b*tches unite! We all know a rumbly tummy can turn your sweet angel into a grizzly bear. Avoid the hangries with an assortment of snacks that’ll keep those little bellies full and moods lifted. And don’t forget to pack something for you, too.

Pro tip: If you’re bringing along perishable snacks or want to keep those fruit purees cool, an insulated food container is a must. It’ll keep everything at the right temp and taste just as it should, no matter how high the mercury rises.

3. Hats

Keep those rays at bay with a cool sun hat.

Pro tip: A waterproof hat for your little one is gold for those splashy moments, so they stay comfy and protected.

4. Spare clothes

Building castles, water fights and skipping stones at the local watering hole are all fun until someone gets a soggy bottom. Pack a change of clothes and a waterproof bag to ferry home those remnants of a day well spent.

5. Sunscreen

SPF is your BFF this season, because even when the sun decides to play peek-a-boo, those UV rays don’t mess about. So tuck a bottle of water resistant, high SPF sun cream into your bag. Reapply regularly and don’t let the sun outsmart you, especially after your kiddo has been making a splash.

Always read the label and follow directions for use. Avoid prolonged sun exposure and wear protective clothing, hats and eyewear to further reduce risk. Frequent re-application is required.

6. Wet wipes

Ice cream faces, sandy hands, and impromptu messes call for the trusty wet wipe. They’re the unsung heroes of any day out, especially in the Summer when things get a little more… melty. Make sure you’ve got plenty on hand for a quick clean on-the-go.

7. Headphones

In the midst of the kiddie chaos and the joyous (yet oh-so-exhausting) play dates, let’s not forget about a slice of me-time. Sneak a pair of headphones into your bag and you’ve got an instant escape hatch. Whether it’s catching up on your fav podcast, sinking into an audiobook, or jamming to your top tunes, you can steal a few moments of bliss.

8. Hand sanitiser

It’s a known fact that kids pick up all sorts of things, but that doesn’t mean you need to bring the bugs home with you. A squirt of hand sanitiser before eating is key for trying to keep the fam healthy and happy this season.

9. Cooling mist

When the heat is on, a fine mist is your secret weapon against the sizzle. Pop a small spray bottle filled with water (or even better, a cooling mist with aloe or lavender) into your bag. A quick spritz can cool down flushed cheeks and provide you all with a refreshing break.

Pro tip: If you want to take this another step further and really beat the heat (especially on a still day), a portable, clip-on fan can be a total game-changer. Attach it to the pram or bring it out during a picnic to get the air moving and keep everyone feeling cool and calm.

10. Bug spray

There’s nothing that sends good vibes packing faster than a squadron of hungry insects. So, our solution? Don’t forget to slip an easy-to-use insect repellent spray into your bag. Spray it on your skin and on your little one’s clothes to create a no-fly zone for flies, sand-flies and mosquitoes. That way, you can enjoy your day without unwelcome guests joining the party. Plus, keeping those itchy bites at bay means a more peaceful sleep for all – and that’s the real win, isn’t it?

With these treasures in your bag, you’re all set to seize the Summer days ahead. So, slather on that sun cream, grab your shades, and let’s make some sun-soaked memories!
