How to break the habit of constantly checking your phone

In Features, Home + Living, Mind Health, Stories, Work by Nicole Fuge

We all know that nudge at the back of our mind, the constant need to pick up our phone and just scroll… Here’s how to break the habit.

By Harper Steele

Technology has its perks, no doubt. It keeps us connected, informed, and often entertained. But sometimes, it feels like we’re more connected with our screens than the real world, missing out on precious moments with our kiddos or some much-needed me-time. It’s time to disrupt this cycle, gorgeous, and reclaim the power from our phones.

“THIS ISN’T ABOUT GOING COLD TURKEY OR FEELING GUILTY WHEN WE DO CHECK OUR PHONES. IT’S ABOUT TAKING CONTROL, FINDING BALANCE, AND ENSURING OUR TECHNOLOGY HABITS ARE HEALTHY AND BENEFICIAL.”

1. Recognise the Habit to Break the Habit

First things first, we have to own it, ladies. Let’s stop, take a breath, and recognise this habit for what it is. It’s okay, we all do it. Acknowledging that we’re spending a tad too much time on our devices is the first stride in our journey to digital freedom.

2. Set Clear Boundaries

Our phones are a tool, not a tyrant. They should serve us, not the other way round. So, let’s lay down some ground rules. Consider creating a designated ‘phone-free zone’ in your house – maybe it’s the dining table, or your cosy reading corner. Also, how about we swap the endless bedtime scrolling with a good old fashioned book? Your eyes and mind will thank you, trust us!

3. Appoint Phone-Free Times

Try setting aside specific phone-free times during your day. It could be when the kiddos are awake, during dinner, or an hour before bed. This can create tech-free bubbles in your day, which is so important for our mental health and for bonding with our loved ones.

4. Use Technology to Your Advantage

Seems ironic, doesn’t it? But there are heaps of apps out there designed to help manage screen time. They can set reminders to take breaks, limit usage on certain apps, or even lock your phone during designated times. A handy little ally in our quest, isn’t it?

5. Engage in Mindful Activities

Nothing beats the phone-checking reflex like a good bit of mindfulness. Take up activities that need your full attention and presence – cooking a new recipe, reading to your kiddos, or even meditating. You’ll feel the difference, beauties, and that phone will start to seem less and less important.

Remember, this isn’t about going cold turkey or feeling guilty when we do check our phones. It’s about taking control, finding balance, and ensuring our technology habits are healthy and beneficial. Your time and attention are precious, darling, and so are you. So, let’s disconnect to reconnect with the world around us.
