Nap trapped? 5 things you can do while your baby sleeps on you

In Features, Mind Health, Motherhood, Pregnancy + Birth, Stories by Nicole Fuge

Found yourself nap trapped again? It’s not wasted time, it’s an opportunity to rest and relax … or to tackle a few to-dos (if you want to).

You know those precious moments when your little one drifts off to dreamland while snuggled up on you? It’s like a warm, cuddly pause button on the chaos of parenthood. A chance to sit and rest your weary bones while the world slowly turns around you.

Isn’t it?

Sometimes it is.

But if you’re someone who finds themselves nap trapped on the regular, not being able to get sh*t done while your baby sleeps can actually be pretty stressful.

If you are person B, good news is there are a few ways to boost your productivity while your baby snoozes away on your lap. So at least you can rest easy knowing you’re checking a few boxes.

1. Dive into a Good Read

Picture this: baby’s dozed off, and you’re left with a chunk of time to kill. Why not grab a book, magazine, or even your Kindle and lose yourself in a world of words? Whether it’s a gripping novel, a juicy gossip mag, or some life advice (because let’s face it, we could all use a little help sometimes), reading is the perfect way to escape the daily grind and recharge your mum batteries.

2. Get Your Learn On

Who says naptime has to be all about chilling? Use those quiet moments to expand your horizons and learn something new. Always wanted to speak French, bake like Mary Berry, or try your hand at DIY crafts? Well, thanks to the wonders of the internet, you can dive into online courses, tutorials, and how-to videos right from the comfort of your sofa. So go ahead, unleash your inner learner and make the most of naptime academia.

3. Connect with Other Mums

Let’s face it, parenting can sometimes feel like a solo mission, especially when you’re stuck at home with a snoozing baby. But fear not, because the internet is here to save the day. Use naptime to join online mum groups, parenting forums, or virtual coffee mornings where you can connect with other mums who get what you’re going through. It’s like having a support group in your pocket, ready to dish out advice, share funny stories, and remind you that you’re not alone in this crazy journey called parenthood.

4. Treat Yourself to Some TLC

Repeat after me: self-care is not selfish. So while baby catches some Z’s on your chest, why not take a little time out to pamper yourself? Slap on a face mask, light a candle, pop on your fav playlist and kick back with a cuppa and your fav snack. Trust me, a little TLC goes a long way in recharging your batteries and keeping those mum vibes strong.

5. Tackle the Little Jobs

Okay, so maybe you’re not going to conquer Mount Everest or repaint the living room while baby sleeps on you (props to you if you do, though), but there are still plenty of little tasks you can tackle to feel productive. Use naptime to blitz through your emails, make a to-do list for the day, or finally sort through that mountain of baby clothes that’s been gathering dust in the corner. By breaking tasks down into bite-sized chunks, you’ll feel like a productivity ninja without breaking a sweat.

So the next time your little one drifts off into dreamland on your chest, grab that opportunity with both hands and make it count.
