The Secret Self-Care Hack For Breastfeeding Mamas

In Features, Motherhood, Stories by Nicole Fuge

Breastfeeding is often depicted as one of the most beautiful experiences a mum and bub can go through – there’s the bonding and the nourishing of your little bebe, and the long gazes into each other’s eyes. But not everyone has that experience, and sometimes mamas have a hard time getting through it.

I am currently breastfeeding my four-month-old son, and I breastfed my daughter until she was 20 months old. And while I really do love the experience – it’s a chance to soak my baby in and have some quiet time after an often cray day – in the early days of being a new mum, it was quite stressful. Florence had always been a petite babe and from those first five days in hospital through to the first few months, I was constantly questioned about my milk supply and had to make sure she was gaining enough weight, to the point I had to set an alarm to wake her in the middle of the night to feed her (which was hard when I was tired AF and desperately wanted to sleep).

A few months into my breastfeeding journey, I found Heart Therapeutics (I wish I had found them sooner) and their teas are seriously ah-mazing. The Milk Maid, in particular, is an important blend made just for new mums to help nurture her through the first part of her postpartum journey.

Made in a boutique apothecary in Noosa (doesn’t it sound so wonderfully magical?) The Milk Maid is a nutritive blend that perfectly fuses traditional herbalism with scientific validation – important for mums in the early postpartum phase to nourish her goddess bod with what she needs most. So it’s no surprise that new mamas highly recommend it and drank it for at least six weeks postpartum (some even continued to drink it right through their breastfeeding journey to one year postpartum) because it really is yum and something you can drink all day long.

So let’s break it down… what exactly does this miracle tea do?

The Milk Maid supports breastfeeding by relaxing mama; increasing her breast milk if needed; it helps with digestion, which is often an issue after birth; it increases mum’s nutrition, which in turn provides nutrition for babe, and it increases hydration.
With a few of my BFFs expecting their babies in the next few months (can’t wait for newborn snugs again), I’ll be creating little care packages for each of them with Heart Therapeutics teas to remind them to look after themselves and indulge in some self-care, particularly in those weary few months of motherhood.
