Workplace wellness? Oh, it’s the game-changer for work-life magic. Think less stress, more zest!

By Harper Steele

Juggling work and home can feel like a circus act sometimes, right? Between morning meetings and the evening hustle at home, it’s easy to forget that you, yes YOU, need some TLC too.

Workplace wellness is about more than just ergonomic chairs and lunchtime walks (though they’re part of the deal too!). It’s about nurturing your mental wellbeing, setting healthy boundaries, and caring for your physical health. Let’s dig in, shall we?

“DON’T BE AFRAID TO TAKE A MENTAL HEALTH DAY IF YOU NEED IT. JUST AS OUR BODIES NEED REST WHEN THEY’RE PHYSICALLY ILL, OUR MINDS NEED TIME TO RECUPERATE TOO.”

OWN YOUR MENTAL WELLBEING

We all have those days where the mental load seems too heavy to bear. It’s completely okay to acknowledge it. Mental wellbeing is as essential as physical health. How do we protect it?

Mindful breaks: Our minds are not machines; they need rest. Incorporate mindful breaks into your day – a 5-minute meditation, some deep breathing exercises, or simply sitting quietly. These ‘me-moments’ can help reset your mind, boosting creativity and productivity.

Mental health days: Don’t be afraid to take a mental health day if you need it. Just as our bodies need rest when they’re physically ill, our minds need time to recuperate too.

Professional help: If things start to feel overwhelming, seeking professional help is never a sign of weakness. Therapists, counsellors, and life coaches can provide tools and techniques to manage stress and improve mental wellbeing.

SET THOSE BOUNDARIES

Setting boundaries is not selfish; it’s necessary for maintaining your sanity. How do we establish healthy boundaries at work?

Communication is key: Clearly express your needs and limitations to your colleagues and superiors. This could be about working hours, workload, or availability for extra tasks.

Disconnect to reconnect: In a digital world, it’s hard to switch off, but you need to disconnect from work-related communication once your official hours are over. Work emails or calls after hours? Unless it’s an absolute emergency, they can wait until morning.

Learn to say no: This might be the hardest one, but remember, you are not expected to do everything. Saying no to tasks that stretch you too thin allows you to focus on what’s important.

PHYSICAL HEALTH – YOU CAN’T POUR FROM AN EMPTY CUP

Your physical health directly impacts your productivity and overall happiness. Let’s look after it!

Movement matters: Regular exercise can do wonders for your physical and mental health. It doesn’t have to be an intense gym workout; a brisk walk during lunch, a morning yoga routine, or dancing in your living room count too.

Nutrition is non-negotiable: Fuel your body with a balanced diet. Your body needs it to function optimally. Also, hydration is key. Keep that water bottle close!

Prioritise sleep: Aim for 7-9 hours of sleep (if you’re not woken by your kids that is!) It’s essential for your body to recover and prepare for the next day. Plus, it boosts mood and helps you cope with stress more effectively.

So, let’s revolutionise with more workplace wellness! Your wellbeing deserves a front-row seat in this grand show we call life. Remember, it’s not about achieving a perfect balance; it’s about finding what works for you. Here’s to healthier, happier workplaces and individuals who take care of themselves as fiercely as they do others.
