Let’s be brutally honest, homework sucks. So to avoid tantrums and tears at homework time (and that’s just from the mamas and papas), Cluey Learning tutors have let us in on a few insider secrets to not only make it bearable, but dare I say it – homework can be fun, kinda…
1 // ESTABLISH A ROUTINE
Set a time and place for your kids to do their homework, such as 4pm at the dining room table or the study after dinner. Having a routine makes sure the homework is done on time and teaches time management. Remember to choose a space that’s free of distractions, such as electronic devices or family conversations. It’s also important to make time for breaks – that’s when you can slay each other on Xbox.
2 // MAKE LEARNING FUN
Even if your child is a bookworm, their eyes may glaze over when it comes to geography or trigonometry. Good news is there are ways to make learning fun – for both of you. Today’s children are digital natives so have a look around for apps and websites that embrace interactive learning.
3 // TALK TO THEM ABOUT THEIR CHALLENGES
It’s important to identify real or imagined learning challenges and address them. Stay positive about tackling problems and keep it real — failure is often a springboard for learning. Chat to them about their struggles and let that steer your approach to teaching at home.
4 // LET THEM COMPLETE THEIR OWN WORK
Sounds super easy, right? But holding back when you know you’re right, or over-explaining something to the point of answering means that kids will never learn to think for themselves and won’t make their own mistakes. So zip it!
5 // DON’T BE AFRAID TO ASK FOR HELP
Being a parent means that we wear several hats (hairdresser, psychologist, vet), but trigonometry expert doesn’t have to be one of them. If you’re not a pro at certain subject matter, there are plenty of people out there who are and they’ll give your child the best advice and instruction – which means you won’t lose your mind analysing Shakespeare’s sonnets late into the night. Thank god for that!
