Taking a bit of time for yourself isn’t selfish; it’s vital. A refreshed mum is a happier mum. And let’s be honest, when mama is happy, the whole household is a sunnier place.

So when the rush of modern mum life becomes too overwhelming, and a visit to the spa seems more like a distant dream, don’t fret. Your skin (and soul) can still get the rejuvenation it craves, right from the comfort of your home.

Here is a step-by-step guide of how to do a simple facial at home – it is totally salon-worthy (plus, you don’t have to get out of your jammies).

After following these steps, your skin will not only feel rejuvenated but it will also glow with a healthy radiance, rivalling any professional facial treatment. The best part? You’ve tapped into the world of self-care, understanding the beauty of taking time for yourself.

It’s time to get your glow on, mama.

“TAKING A BIT OF TIME FOR YOURSELF ISN’T SELFISH; IT’S VITAL. A REFRESHED MUM IS A HAPPIER MUM.”

1. Vibe away

Before you start your facial journey, curate a calming atmosphere. Light your fav scented candles, put on some soothing tunes, and wrap yourself in a comfy robe. Remember, relaxation is half the treatment.

2. Start with a Clean Canvas

Remove dirt, make-up, and impurities with a gentle cleanser. For a DIY option, combine 1/4 cup of liquid castile soap, 2 tablespoons of witch hazel, 1/2 cup of distilled water and 1-2 teaspoons of jojoba oil. Massage onto damp skin, then rinse with warm water.

3. The Beauty of Steam

Steaming opens up pores, preparing your skin for the treatments that follow. Fill a bowl with hot water and lean over it, allowing the steam to caress your face. For added benefits, toss in herbs like chamomile or rose petals.

4. Exfoliation Time

Exfoliation gets rid of dead skin cells, so give your skin some love with your fav exfoliating polish, or you can make your own homemade scrub. To do this, mix 1/2 cup of granulated sugar with 1/4 cup of jojoba oil, 1/4 teaspoon of vitamin E oil and a few drops of your fav essential oil. In circular motions, gently rub the mixture on your face for about a minute. Rinse with warm water and pat your skin dry.

5. Mask Magic

A purifying facial mask can help rejuvenate and nourish the skin. For a DIY mask, make a paste with 1 tablespoon of baking soda, a little bit of water and a drop of your chosen essential oil – eg: lavender for relaxation, tea tree for purifying. Apply the mixture evenly and let it sit for 5-10 minutes (feel the tingles!) before washing off.

Note: Baking soda can be a bit strong for some skin types, so this facial mask is best as an occasional treat every one or two weeks, rather than a regular daily ritual.

6. Moisturise for a Luminous Glow

Finish off with a hydrating moisturiser or serum. For a natural touch, a dab of aloe vera gel will seal in the moisture, leaving your skin soft and radiant.

7. Refresh with a Facial Mist

As a cherry on top, spritz some rosewater or a mixture of distilled water with a few drops of essential oil (like lavender) to refresh and hydrate your skin.

Optional: The Extra Touches

Consider adding a gentle face massage with facial oils or giving your eyes some love with cucumber slices or chilled tea bags.

Why mamas need ‘Me-Time’

Being a mum, especially in these hectic times, is a marathon, not a sprint. So, here’s the lowdown on why taking a breather isn’t just nice – it’s essential.

Mental wellbeing: A quick breather, even if it’s just sipping your tea whilst it’s still hot, can do wonders for your mood and sanity.

Keeping the glow: You’d be surprised what a bit of at-home pampering can do! Face masks, a bubbly bath, or even a quick dance-off in the living room can keep you feeling sprightly.

Setting a good example: Kids are like sponges. When they see mama taking a moment for herself, they learn about self-respect and the importance of personal time.

3 ways to grab those golden moments

1. How about a 5-minute cuppa on the balcony? Or perhaps a cheeky chocolate biscuit in peace? Embrace these little moments when you get them; they add up!

2. Next time the kids are entertained or, heaven forbid, napping, retreat to your bathroom and indulge in your new at-home facial. Or, if you’re pressed for time, skip a few steps – the key is to melt that stress away.

3. Every so often, pop your mobile in a drawer and dive into a book or magazine. The social media scroll can wait; your peace of mind can’t.
