Sarah Pickersgill-Brown opened the doors to her son’s room to share the inspiration behind this beautiful boy’s bedroom.

Life can feel crazy for kids these days, so a bedroom that feels like a calming cuddle is the perfect remedy. And fashion and home decor stylist Sarah Pickersgill-Brown is an absolutely guru at achieving this vibe.
Sarah is mum to twin boys, Quill and Caspian (she also has another gorge son, Elbie). Knowing they share almost everything in life, including birthdays, she knew it would be important to create individual spaces for them to retreat to that were all their own.

WHAT IS THE THEME OF THE ROOM?
I wanted to concentrate on just a few of his favourite things. Such as his interest in art, his love of skateboards, BMX biking and interest in fashion. But the overall theme is ‘retreat’. A restful and calm place for my little boy to relax and recharge after busy days of constant stimulation at school or play.
The wallpaper I had custom made by Minnie And Me Interiors to mimic an artist’s paint stroke. And his floating desk was custom made by The Timber Line to fit all his treasures exactly. We repainted his wardrobe together as a project and it’s filled with his favourite clothes and shoes. His toy chest is filled with monster trucks and mini skateboard ramps.
WHY WAS DOING A SPECIAL SPACE FOR QUILL IMPORTANT TO YOU?
It was the boys’ first year at school and I wanted them to each have their own space to store things and unwind separately after busy days. They prefer not to sleep alone, but the ritual of inviting each other into their own spaces is super important, especially sharing the same birthday and so many other things involved with being a twin.
WHAT MADE YOU DECIDE ON THE THEME FOR THE ROOM?
I wanted it to be peaceful yet still include special interests. Painting and craft is something Quill really loves, so the theme centres mainly around this.
HOW MUCH TIME DO YOU SPEND IN THE SPACE?
His room stays surprisingly very tidy. So we go in there most mornings for a special activity. Such as doing a puzzle on the floor, or setting up some Hot Wheels tracks. I like that we do one game all together that’s special and involves us all, then it gets packed away. The shared living areas have toys left all over the place as they start a game and get distracted and move away.
WHAT WOULD BE YOUR ONE MAIN PIECE OF STYLING ADVICE?
It’s time-consuming, but planning a room thoroughly before buying anything is really important. I’m definitely an impulsive buyer as I get attached to things and ‘have to have it’ immediately! But having done this a lot in the past, I’ve realised it’s far more satisfying to bring a whole room together cohesively. Rather than have a few things you love, but they don’t work with everything else perfectly.
I force myself to moodboard. I don’t enjoy the process if I’m completely honest, but I’m far happier with the end result when I plan properly, so it’s worth the time taken to research.
