Maternity leave finished? Here’s how to navigate this new phase – stepping out of the baby bubble and back into work

By Mama Disrupt®

We all know that becoming a mother changes everything. Our hearts, our homes, our schedules, even our concept of a ‘good night’s sleep’ – all altered by the arrival of that little bundle of joy.

The world never quite looks the same once we join the ranks of motherhood. And then, just when we feel we’ve finally mastered the art of the nappy change and perfected our baby-rocking sway, a new challenge looms on the horizon: heading back to work.

Stepping back into our professional selves after basking in the beautiful chaos of early motherhood can be daunting. This transition, just like motherhood itself, can be filled with a wave of emotions: excitement, anxiety, guilt, and even a bit of relief … it’s okay, mama, we’ve all been there!

“JUST LIKE PARENTHOOD, RETURNING TO WORK WILL NOT GO EXACTLY AS PLANNED. BE PREPARED FOR DAYS WHEN EVERYTHING RUNS SMOOTHLY AND DAYS WHEN NOTHING DOES.”

Embrace Your Emotions [all of them]

Excited to regain a sense of professional self? Guilty about leaving your baby with a caregiver? Anxious about balancing work and family life? Yes, yes, and yes. These emotions are all a part of the journey. Remember, mama, it’s okay to feel all of these, and it doesn’t make you any less of a supermum.

Lean on Your Tribe

Don’t do it alone. If there’s one thing we mamas do well, it’s rallying together. Share your fears, triumphs, and those funny #mumlife moments with your partner, family, friends, or even an online community. You’d be surprised how many people can relate to what you’re going through. You’re not alone in this transition.

Practice Self-Care

Now more than ever, self-care needs to be a priority. It might sound like a pipe dream in between late-night feeds and never-ending to-do lists, but carving out time for yourself can make a world of difference. Whether it’s a bubble bath, a brisk walk, or simply a few moments of silence with your morning coffee, find what helps you reset and recharge.

Be Flexible

Just like parenthood, returning to work will not go exactly as planned. Be prepared for days when everything runs smoothly and days when nothing does. It’s all a part of the journey, and it’s okay. Embrace the chaos and remember that you are doing an amazing job.

Celebrate Your Achievements

Heading back to work after maternity leave is a huge milestone. Celebrate your successes, both big and small. Managed to get through a day without baby spit on your shirt? Victory! Juggled a conference call while soothing a fussy baby? Mama, you’re a hero.

Remember, mamas, this transition back into the workforce is just another part of your journey. It’s okay to take it one step at a time and find what works best for you and your family. As always, the mantra of motherhood applies: Be kind to yourself, trust your instincts, and know that you’re doing an incredible job.
