Unlock your Summer glow

In Features, Nourish, Stories by Nicole Fuge

By Nicole Fuge

We’re feeling all of the #bodypositive vibes here at MD with our NAKED TRUTH issue, and it seems you are too – we love!

With Spring in full swing, Summer will be hot on our heels before we know it (it’s three months to Christmas!!!), so we caught up with MasterChef legend and mama Sarah Todd, to find out how she unlocks her glow for Spring/Summer and how we can all nourish our bods.

And you know what? Sarah and her adorbs son Phoenix, 8, love a sneaky treat day as much as the rest of us. Phoenix is a total #foodie and lurves all kinds of food as much as his mama does and their fav thing to do is bake cookies together. “We’ve done everything from Oreo to chocolate chip, and we always make sure it’s a double batch!”

Sarah, if you and Phoenix ever need taste-testers, you know where to find us!

Nourish your fam and unlock your glow

1 // Embrace the new beginnings that come with Spring

Spring is the perfect time to declutter and, for me, this goes beyond improving the aesthetic of my home. Not only does decluttering your life help in reducing stress and anxiety levels, but it also improves productivity, mood and helps me adopt a minimalistic approach. It’s best to start small by simply cleaning out your handbag. You’ll be amazed at how this one small task will make you feel. Then, you can move on to the pantry, linen cupboard, fridge, and even your body; through cleaning up your weekly meal choices. Once you start, you won’t want to stop until you are clutter free and feeling fresh.

2 // Change the way you approach healthy food with your fam

Often, healthy foods are considered boring, but with the right recipes and ingredients, healthy and wholesome meals can be delicious and flavoursome for children of all ages. Cheat meals for kids and adults are great, provided the other meals during the day are balanced.

3 // Make healthier food choices

Whether busy mamas are dining at home or out, it’s important to make healthier food choices. With our hectic lifestyles, we often unknowingly become influenced by what we see, hear, or scroll past on social media or in everyday advertising. Simply by choosing a side salad instead of chips, or occasionally going plant-based helps to nourish your body more than you know.

4 // Have an easy recipe in your arsenal

My fav is Chicken Tikka, a very simple yogurt spiced marinate chicken – it’s super easy! This recipe can be cooked in under 10 minutes, making it perfect for any time-poor parent!

800g boneless and skinless chicken thighs cut into bite-sized pieces
1 cup plain yogurt
1 1/2 tablespoons minced garlic
1 tablespoon ginger
2 teaspoons garam masala
1 teaspoon turmeric
1 teaspoon ground cumin
1 teaspoon Kashmiri chili (or 1/2 teaspoon ground red chili powder)
1 teaspoon of salt
Skewers and coriander to serve

In a bowl, combine chicken with all of the ingredients; let marinate for 10 minutes to an hour (or overnight if time allows). Once marinated skewer 3-4 pieces per skewer. Heat oil in a large skillet or pot over medium-high heat or heat your BBQ. When sizzling, add chicken pieces in small batches, making sure not to crowd the pan or barbeque. Fry until browned and cooked through for only 4-5 minutes on each side. Serve with fresh coriander and a side salad.

5 // Adopt time-saving hacks in the kitchen

The art of being creative with leftovers is everything! For instance, if I’ve got roast lamb and potatoes from the previous night, I’ll store them in my ClickClack containers and use it in a drool-worthy sandwich the following day. Getting creative with leftovers kept super fresh helps to not only save cooking time, but also makes for a delicious lunch!
