If your mini has outgrown their space and you’re stuck for ideas, here are 5 tips for renovating your kid’s bedroom. Pssst… the third hack is genius!

“THE FOCUS SHOULD BE ON MAKING THE ROOM FEEL SPECIAL – A PLACE YOUR CHILD WILL BE HAPPY TO BE ALONE IN.”

1. PLAN FOR THE YOUNG ADULTS THEY’LL BECOME

A kid’s room is a very different styling challenge, but it’s just as achievable as styling an adult space. And it doesn’t have to bust the budget.

The focus should be on making the room feel special – a place your child will be happy to be alone in. Don’t just design for the child they are now, think ahead to their teenage years – they’ll be here sooner than you think!

This can be a private space they can escape to, do their homework in, talk on the phone… a well-designed room will be able to grow with them.

2. BLOCK-OUT BLINDS OR SHUTTERS?

Blinds may not be top of mind when you think about styling a kid’s room, but window coverings are key.

When they’re little, they can help block out the light for those all-important naps. Once your kids are old enough, make sure the curtains or blinds can be opened and closed by your child [to avoid you having to open them every morning].

Go cord free, if possible. If you have to have cords, make sure they are within reach but also that they meet safety standards. In these rooms, the plantation shutters are safe and easy-as-pie for little hands to open.

3. THINK BIGGER BEDS

Most parents buy their kids a standard single bed after they’ve outgrown their cot, but this is likely to lead to another bed purchase down the track.

If the room size is generous enough, consider jumping straight to a king single or even a double.

4. MAKE IT FUN

One of our fav tips for renovating your kid’s bedroom is to incorporate elements that are a little whimsical, if you can.

What little girl or boy can resist a hanging chair? It’s magical and fun whether you’re six or 16. If you go for this, make sure it’s attached to a stud in the ceiling or you’ll find it ripped out and lying on the floor! In her oldest son’s room, Bonnie even managed to work in a climbing wall under a skylight!

5. GORGEOUS ART ISN’T JUST FOR GROWN-UPS

Never underestimate how great beautifully framed art can look in your kids’ rooms or how much they might appreciate it, even when they’re little.

Again, think long term when looking for the perfect piece. Remember that you don’t have to choose something too childish; something with an element of fun that you both love looking at will be a much better investment.
