Founder of The Goat Skincare Tijana Desancic

7 questions with The Goat Skincare co-creator, Tijana Desancic

In Boss Mama, Features, Motherhood, Stories by Nicole Fuge

From a simple solution to help deal with childhood eczema to the global business it is today, co-creator Tijana Desancic has been there since The Goat Skincare’s birth.

Way before “natural” was having the moment it is today, Sally Desancic was looking for a drug-freeway to treat her daughter Ivana’s eczema. As a skincare and beauty buyer, she was no stranger to natural products, but saw a gap in the market for a solution that worked for the whole family, irrespective of age, gender or skin concern. And so, the first product from The Goat Skincare – a bar of goat’s milk soap – was born.

A family business in the truest sense of the word, all the products in The Goat Skincare range (including The Baby Goat Skincare) are created with the intention of nurturing the family through the simplicity of nature. And this vision is brought to life by founders, husband-and-wife duo Sally and Ray Desancic and their daughter, Ivana’s twin, Tijana Desancic, who has been working in the business since high school. We caught up with Tijana – who balances her work at The Goat Skincare with raising her gorgeous one-year-old daughter Sofia – to chat about family, babies, and The Baby Goat Skincare.

The Goat Skincare product in baby basket1 // WHAT ARE YOU MOST PROUD OF WITH THE BABY GOAT BRAND?

The beautiful feedback we receive from our customers. As a new mum you worry a lot, and always think the worst when you see a rash or spot on your child’s skin. So when I read feedback from customers who have had success with the brand, my heart quite literally melts and I know we’ve done a good thing.

2 // WHAT SETS THE BABY GOAT SKINCARE APART FROM OTHER GOAT’S MILK PRODUCTS ON THE MARKET?

Our ingredients. There are no sulphates, parabens or harsh chemicals in the range. Our goats’ milk is fresh, local Australian goats milk from an extremely reputable supplier who pride themselves on the high quality diet, treatment and living conditions of their animals. All of our ingredients are handpicked, natural and inspired by traditional remedies.

3 // YOUR DAUGHTER SOFIA IS A YEAR AND A HALF NOW. WHAT IS THE GREATEST THING SHE HAS TAUGHT YOU?

There are so many things she’s seeing or learning about for the first time and it makes me appreciate life’s little moments so much more. It reinforces that we really shouldn’t take this life for granted, so when you see a bright blossoming rose stop and SMELL it! It’s these little treasures that life has given you for free so take them!

4 // HOW DID YOUR RELATIONSHIP WITH THE BABY GOAT SKINCARE RANGE CHANGE AFTER BECOMING A MUM?

I realised just how much trust parents put in us when using our skincare – and that’s a momentous responsibility. But luckily for me, I know exactly what goes into these products so not only can I trust that nothing harmful is ever put onto Sofia’s skin, but I can give that assurance to Mum’s around Australia.

5 // HOW HAVE YOU MANAGED THE WORK/ MUM BALANCE?

I went back to part time work – along with my breast pump – when Sofia was just six months old. I was suddenly working at a faster pace than I’d ever worked, constantly thinking about what I had to do for my job and simultaneously what I had to do for my child. I knew I had to be quick and efficient and it was all a juggle, and if I managed a shower at the end of the day then I was winning!

6 // HAS BEING A MUM INSPIRED ANY NEW PRODUCT IDEAS?

So many – it’s just finding the time to do them! I’m much more conscious of everything I do now because I want to set an example for Sofia, and I want her to learn from me and be proud of me. We have a few more very exciting products in the pipeline for The Baby Goat Skincare range though, so stay tuned!

7 // DO YOU HAVE ANY ADVICE FOR OTHER WORKING MUMS?

Breathe, mama! I know it’s crazy, but you can do it. Just forget the dirty house and unwashed hair. You’ll get around to it eventually! Oh and if you can, pre-make soups and sauces and stick them in the freezer – it’s a game changer.
