Tiny Hearts First Aid program – created by sister duo Nikki Jurcutz and Rachael Waia – aims to empower parents with the knowledge and skill of first aid, so they feel confident to act in a medical emergency when it comes to their little ones.
As a former paramedic, during her time working on road Nikki has experienced first-hand the lack of community first aid knowledge.
“While there was an abundance of information for parents and caregivers on nappies and prams,” Nikki explains, “there was a clear information gap when it came to the health and wellbeing of their little ones.”
It was this experience that prompted Nikki to reach out to sister, Rachael, who was working in education at the time, with a proposal to deliver first aid education that really makes a difference.
Tiny Hearts is aimed at mums, grandparents and carers of babies and toddlers and teaches them how to deal with medical situations. And since launching in five years ago, Nikki and Rachael have had the pleasure of training some of Australia’s most influential parents such as Megan Gale, Natalie Bassingwaighte, Nadia Bartel, Zoe and Hamish Blake, Rebecca Maddern and more.
“It’s so important to know these skills because you can’t rely on an ambulance arriving in time to save your child’s life,” Nikki says.
Offering courses across Australia and New Zealand, during the program participants are taught how to cope with a number of medical situations, from choking and convulsions to fevers and falls.
“You’ll actually be able to self-triage pretty much and say, ‘this is an emergency, this is what I need to do,'” Nadia adds.
As the youngest women in Australia to open a Registered Training Organisation, the sisters have built a company with heart and in addition to offering courses they also sell essential first aid kits on their website (which also happen to be super cute).
“Our family first aid kits are jam-packed with 75 essential first aid items,” Rachael says.
“The contents of our paediatric first aid kits have been hand-selected by medical professionals who genuinely understand what you need as a parent in a first aid emergency.”
In the five short years that Tiny Hearts has been running, so far they’ve empowered over 50,000 parents with the lifesaving skill and knowledge of first aid. And things aren’t slowing down anytime soon. In addition to running the courses that you can book into, the sisters are working with, and petitioning the government, to provide subsidised courses, too.
